Promoting of the Remote Healthcare Model in Catalan Healthcare System 2013-2016 approved by Government

The last 4th of March the Government of Catalonia approved of the implementation of Remote Healthcare Model to enhance the relationship between citizens and professionals in healthcare scope.

The Pla de salut de Catalunya 2011-2015 was projected with the aim of being the underlying instrument for future public healthcare sector challenges and with the aim of dealing with the tendency structural bunch of social, technology and economic character, which jeopardize the stay of the current Catalan healthcare system.  

The remote healthcare model arises from this context as a new communication channel to promote as a new useful tool to solve health problems and administrative tasks, which don’t need an in-person visit to health centres using ICT and the implementation of service offering throw them.

The model enhances already done systems in the healthcare sector and it also creates new ones, approaching the healthcare system to people. For instance, one citizen could take advantage of using this new model to speed up some clinical consultations or official procedure which would be solved electronically instead of going in-person to the consultation.

Another contribution is the new model will help to bring closer the rural areas where the zones are farthest. There, the citizens could have a more personalized and continued attendance.

Furthermore, this model offers a nearer and more specialized care for those patients with one or several health chronic problems. They are the main beneficiaries of this type of care, much more continued and individualized giving more confidence to people, relative and carer.

In this sense, one substantial aspect is the use of the Canal Personal de Salut (CPS), which as main way to develop this model it is the space in which citizens and professionals will have to carry out their actions or use the services offered. Through this channel the citizen may consult clinical information or their medication, manage documentation and paperwork, make their controls, communicate with their health professionals, use prescribed Apps, see prevention protocols, follow their chronic disease, revive information about how improve their health, and finally, download the healthcare apps with safety and quality guarantees.

To sum up, with this model all resources are collected to approach and facilitating access to healthcare services overall, with technological and accessibility level which is required by society of the XXI century, joint responsibility to managers and professionals in the prevention, control and health monitoring to make together a more efficient, universal, user-friendly and sustainable health system.
